Anchorage Mayor Not Running in Alaska Senate Race
May 23, 2013 · 8:39 AM EDT
Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan (R) has no interest in running for the United States Senate in Alaska, according to knowledgeable sources, even though he met with officials at the National Republican Senatorial Committee just last week.
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be a Dan Sullivan in the race. Alaska Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Daniel S. Sullivan is seriously considering the race. The GOP field could also include Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, who formed an exploratory committee in December, and Joe Miller, the 2010 GOP nominee who lost the general election to write-in Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
Republicans are looking for a quality nominee to take on Sen. Mark Begich (D), who was elected with 48 percent of the vote in 2008. The Rothenberg Political Report currently rates the race as Toss-Up/Tilt Democrat, assuming Republicans don’t nominate Miller again.
